Adventures from Far and Near: A Decade of Collecting

[Breton Landscape], 1938 or 1939
24 October – 24 December 2015

The exhibition Adventures from Far and Near: A Decade of Collecting surveys the acquisitions made by the fine art collection at the McLean Museum over the last decade. The fine art collection at the McLean Museum has always sought to be adventurous in bringing the widest range of works to the public and this tradition has continued over the last decade. During that period the collection has acquired works depicting local scenes and works by local artists in addition to a wide range of other works, contemporary and historical.

In this exhibition the works acquired during the last decade can be seen together. They range from modern views of Inverclyde by contemporary local artists to historical works showing Inverclyde landmarks. There are also historical portraits of the father and grandfather of James Watt, modern portraits of the new Glasgow Boys and a survey a contemporary art from New Guinea featuring colourful, dynamic paintings of this exotic island and its wildlife.

One of the outstanding works on display will be the recently acquired painting [Breton Landscape] by the internationally famous Greenock born artist William Scott, recently gifted to the Museum by the William Scott Foundation.
